Music inspires art

Arch has recently donned the design director cap at Shine and the Beck's Music Inspires Art campaign is a recent project to come out of that. Local artists took inspiration from local musicians to create some spiffing limited edition labels. Artists include Andrew McLeod, Gavin Hurley and Rainbowmonkey. Get a 12-pack now while they're still around.

à la Lockhart

Exceptional stylist and friend of Inhouse, Katie Lockhart curated these beautiful still-lifes which are featured in the Dec/Jan 2012 edition of HOME magazine. Photography props to Darryl Ward. If you're interested in eyeing up good-looking and quality products, head over to Katie's online homewares and design store everyday-needs.com.

We heart foil

Print processes are what we're about here at Inhouse and we use them as often as possible even for small runs with small budgets. This invite was printed inexpensively on a digital machine and with the addition of a bit of silver foil, it looks a million bucks.

MM Collection, mmmmm

We love love love the lastest collection from MM Collection aka Emma Hayes. This silk throw is from the River Print series. Check out the rest of the collection here.

Finn/Crane

A sample of one of the ads we've been putting out for Crane Brothers. This one in Pilot magazine. A simple ad feels so much more refined and sophisticated. Just like Crane Brothers suits really. Killer website by Sons & Co - crane-brothers.com

Eat Me

A new title from viction:ary, Eat Me is a yummy look at graphic design and packaging in food items. The physical book is super cool, exposed spine, all uncoated with two sections printed on brown paper for a lovely striped effect on all four sides. The cover makes me dream of a white chocolate waffle cone, mmmmm. And as a bonus, Inhouse is featured within it's pages.

HOME movie

As a pre-launch to our first re-designed issue of HOME New Zealand magazine, we made a behind-the-scenes video of the design in process.

Gibbs Farm web

We've been lucky enough to work on the website for Gibbs Farm in Kaipara Harbour. Home to a series of major site specific artworks commissioned from some of the world’s most significant artists; Richard Serra, Anish Kapoor, Andy Goldsworthy, Sol Lewitt, as well as local legends, Len Lye, Ralph Hotere, Neil Dawson and more. www.gibbsfarm.org.nz

Cosmo, take 01

A new friend has arrived in the studio.

Promised Gift

A little catalogue for the Robertson Collection at the Auckland Art Gallery. Gold foil on Rives, nice that.

Laneways

A fun day out for Inhousers at the 2012 Laneway festival in Auckland - sun, tunes, refreshments, a sea-breeze and shapes from Arch. Highlights include M83, Yuck and Girls.

A grand old time

For a new music book that we designed, we were lucky enough to be invited to the launch at Sir James Wallace's art-infused home and experience an intimate concert from pianist Stephen De Pledge.

Stata Centre

Wondering around MIT, we were engrossed by this crazy bit of architecture by Frank Gehry. The Stata Centre was opened in 2004, housing classes for Artificial Intelligence and Philosophy students, among others. And Noam Chomsky has an office there.

Neon Graveyard

A recent trip to the states included a quick visit to the Neon Museum outside Las Vegas.

Ka Mate

Circa Rugby World Cup 2011 we did the graphics for a rousing exhibition on the history of the Haka. It's still on and you can check it out at the National Library on Stanley St in Auckland. The exhibition closes in Auckland in April and then heads down country.

ffa

A lovely bit of typography for our good friend Catriona. FFA also stands for Fantastic Friendly Accountants.

In Residence

The new Resident logo is now in effect. The New Zealand lighting + furniture company will launch at London Design Week in September.

Design cups

These take-away coffee cups for the Graphic Design Museum are hot. Designed by Michiel Schuurman, a colour mastermind. www.michielschuurman.nl

Oh Helvetica

A couple of posters in a series we've been doing for exhibitions at Michael Lett.

Jim Denevan

We love these epic sand sculptures by Jim Denevan. They emerge like a dance and become interactive public spaces when he's done. Surfers walk over and through the elegant patterns he leaves behind. Delighted beachgoers follow the curling spiral work like it's a labyrinth, pacing inwards and then retracing their steps. The incoming tide participates as well, and always has the last word as it erases the temporary artworks with the sweep of each passing wave. www.jimdenevan.com

Britopark

A series of typographic treats knocked out of hot spots in Britomart, downtown Auckland. In collaboration with Shine.

No.1 Letterpress

I recently attended a letterpress workshop hosted by Graham Judd of GTO Printers. I was a kid in a candy shop with so much wooden type at my fingertips and old school letterpress machines. Nothing beats the feeling of scrubbing your hands with turps at the end of a hard days work. Workshop dates here.

Thursday’s

The Thursday dawn ride at Woodhill forest is somewhat of an Inhouse tradition. Dogs, deer and downhills, all followed by the best coffee of the week from the lovely Helen at Free-ridin' in Kumeu.

(This shot by the talented Mr Guthrie.)

D&AD

Well we didn’t actually win anything, but if you know anything about the D&AD Awards, you’ll know that to be short-listed is quite a feat in itself. The London based D&AD Awards are one of the most selective and prestigious award shows in the world. Given the sheer volume of entrants and the high standard of the work entered, to win a coveted pencil, or to make the shortlist, is a notoriously difficult challenge. PILOT & Inhouse are chuffed to announce that PILOT Magazine issue #4 was shortlisted in the Magazine and Newspaper Design section for the D&AD Professional Awards 2011. We’re in pretty good company alongside other titles such as Wallpaper*, Monocle and Wired.

Pilot on the press

Photographer Charles Howells casts his discerning eye over his Prada based fashion editorial in the new issue of PILOT. The PILOT team spent the Easter break press-passing the new issue at the printers. We think it’s a very pretty looking issue. Pretty in a good way. The new issue will be in stores across New Zealand on Thursday May 5, and across Australia 2 weeks later.
